One of the most common questions we get at Xplorer is, “When is the best time to dive the Red Sea?” And here’s our favorite answer: It’s always a good time. The Red Sea offers world-class diving 365 days a year. However, each season has its own unique magic, shifting currents, and marine life encounters.
So, the real question is: what kind of diving adventure are you looking for? This guide will help you match your diving dreams to the perfect time of year.
The Red Sea Climate: A Quick Overview
The Red Sea is blessed with a desert climate, meaning plenty of sun and minimal rain. Water temperatures are inviting year-round, but they do fluctuate, influencing both marine life activity and the best regions to explore.
Seasonal Dive Guide: What to Expect & Where to Go with Xplorer
Spring (March – May)
The Season of Perfect Balance
-
Conditions: Air temperatures are pleasantly warm. Water temps climb from 22°C (72°F) in March to a lovely 26°C (79°F) by May. Visibility is often excellent.
-
Marine Life Highlights: This is a fantastic time for pelagic action. As the water warms up, life blossoms.
-
Hammerhead sharks begin their appearances at the remote southern reefs (Brothers, Daedalus, Elphinstone).
-
Manta rays are more frequently seen.
-
You might even spot oceanic whitetip sharks in the open water.
-
-
Xplorer’s Recommendation: Spring is incredibly versatile. It’s prime time for our Southern “Expedition” liveaboards to catch the early shark season, while our Northern routes offer comfortable, crystal-clear diving.
Summer (June – August)
The Season of Big Encounters & Warm Waters
-
Conditions: This is the hottest time of year, both in and out of the water. Surface temps can reach 30°C (86°F), and water temps are a bath-like 28-30°C (82-86°F). A 3mm shorty or even a rash guard is often enough.
-
Marine Life Highlights: Summer is peak season for shark sightings in the deep south.
-
Scalloped hammerhead sharks are the main attraction at the offshore towers.
-
High probability of encountering oceanic whitetips.
-
Dolphin pods are very active.
-
-
Xplorer’s Recommendation: This is the time for experienced divers to join our most adventurous “Expedition” liveaboards. The currents can be stronger, but the rewards are unparalleled. It’s also a great time for leisurely reef exploration in the North.
Autumn (September – November)
The Second Season of Perfection
-
Conditions: Similar to spring, autumn offers a “Goldilocks” zone. The intense summer heat mellows, and water temperatures gradually cool from 28°C (82°F) to 24°C (75°F). The water is at its clearest.
-
Marine Life Highlights: The mega-fauna from summer is still around in early autumn. As the season progresses, you get a wonderful mix.
-
Hammerheads are still frequently seen in September/October.
-
Large schools of fish like barracuda and snapper are abundant.
-
This is also a great time for coral and macro life, as the reefs remain vibrant.
-
-
Xplorer’s Recommendation: An excellent window for all types of diving. You can chase the last of the big shark action in the South or enjoy stellar conditions on our Northern “Discovery” routes.
Winter (December – February)
The Season of Calm & Wrecks
-
Conditions: Air temperatures are cooler, especially in the evenings. Water temps drop to their lowest, ranging from 21-23°C (70-73°F). A 5mm wetsuit is recommended. The payoff? Incredibly calm seas and some of the best visibility of the year.
-
Marine Life Highlights: While the big sharks have mostly retreated to the warmer deep south, life is still thriving.
-
This is the ultimate wreck diving season. The calm seas provide perfect conditions for exploring the SS Thistlegorm and other famous wrecks.
-
Dugongs are more frequently spotted in the Marsa Alam area.
-
Reef life is spectacular, with fantastic visibility showcasing the colors.
-
-
Xplorer’s Recommendation: Winter is ideal for our Northern and Wreck-Dedicated itineraries. It’s also perfect for photographers seeking the clearest water and for divers who prefer cooler temperatures.
